'MySpace angle' boosts annual hook up rate

Runway model

As if we didn't know it already, but it really does boost your chances with the opposite sex to post a profile pic with the most flattering angle possible.

A recent study by dating site OkCupid has found that the famed 'MySpace angle' — referring to a profile pic taken from an overly-flattering and overly-stylised position — has actually been a runaway success for female users.

You might think that we could throw this one on the "tell us something we don't know" pile, but it turns out that conventional wisdom on the 'MySpace angle' was that it was an obvious and uneffective ploy from those wishing to make themselves appear more attractive.

Perhaps it's just that the results of the report have proved the opposite in quite a drastic way.

According to OkCupid, the average number of new contacts for women who use the 'MySpace angle' per month is over fifteen, while for those who use normal photos it is only eight. If you think that statistic is disappointing then get ready for this; women who post a profile pic of themselves engaging in anything like an interesting activity can expect to see their number of new monthly contacts drop below the established average.

Why is this even worth considering? Clearly this has a lot more to do with boring men than interesting women. In fact it's got everything to do with boring men. But it does beg the question — are first impressions the only ones that count? And before you say anything, we absolutely don't think that's the case, but we want to know how you feel about it.
